Company:
amaysim
Industry:
The Customer

amaysim is a leading provider of mobile and energy services in Australia. amaysim exists to make the lives of its customers simple. Launched in 2010, and now, according to Telsyte’s Australian Mobile Services Market 2019 report, Australia’s fourth largest mobile service provider and a successful market disruptor, amaysim brings fairness and flexibility to the mobile industry. amaysim has recently expanded into the energy-as-a-service sector.

The Challenge

amaysim needed a subscription management platform to launch and manage flexible, energy subscription plans and cross-sell these packages to mobile consumers.

The Solution

Zuora Central and Zuora CPQ offer amaysim the necessary agility to bring its product quickly to market and experiment with pricing and packaging. And Zuora Collect helps improve collections and decrease churn.

The Benefits

Now an essential part of the amaysim software stack, Zuora helps manage all the back-office challenges of cross-selling products and driving the adoption of subscription plans.

“Having a software platform like Zuora Central that is agile and purpose-built for subscriptions is absolutely fundamental to our business.” – Peter O’Connell, CEO and Co-Founder of amaysim

In 2010, when amayism first launched, it went up against three large carriers that were monopolizing the mobile services market. Whereas those carriers offered only long-term contracts with unfriendly terms and conditions and hidden charges, amaysim focused on the customers’ needs, designing a simple product with simple terms and conditions, and a simple pricing structure.

amaysim insisted on having no contract; the challenge to itself was to keep the customer so happy that the customer would not want to leave. In this way they were able to disrupt the Australian mobile phone market to become a successful provider of mobile services.

Fast forward to 2019, when amaysim expanded on this model to launch the first-ever subscription energy product in Australia. The subscription energy product platform is now deployed throughout the east coast of Australia, and will be formally launched next year, it has also been soft launched in Victoria. amaysim’s aim is to disrupt the energy retail sector.

A key part of amaysim’s strategy is to cross sell energy with mobile services. amaysim wants to grow its customer base in energy and mobile and, through the cross sell, reduce churn in both services. amaysim is already moving to transfer its mobile customers to the Zuora platform that is supporting subscription energy.

The launch of subscription energy is a great opportunity but also a great challenge.

As Peter O’Connell, CEO and Managing Director at amaysim noted, “We want to disrupt retail energy in Australia and we have the skill and pedigree to do that; but we need a billing platform that can help us embrace this opportunity.”

With over a million mobile subscribers and, with energy subscriber numbers increasing, amaysim is on a fast growth trajectory. But its legacy, complex, siloed technology infrastructure restricted its ability to launch new products and impeded its ability to grow. It needed a single billing platform that could scale, support go-to-market launches, and improve the customer experience.

It looked to Zuora for help. Notes, O’Connell, “Having a software platform like Zuora Central that is agile and purpose-built for subscriptions is absolutely fundamental to our business.”

With Zuora Central, amaysim has the platform it needs to monetize the new subscription energy  product line and monitor important indexes of its efficiency model to help maintain sustainable margins.

With Zuora CPQ, amaysim can offer attractive pricing and packaging in an easy-to-understand structure for customers which helps build a better customer experience and stronger customer relationships.

And with Zuora Collect, amaysim is streamlining payments and processing transactions to decrease overall churn.

By running its new energy service on the Zuora Central platform, amaysim is maintaining the agility needed to scale in a rapidly evolving consumer energy market. And, going forward, amaysim’s leaders know that they have the flexibility to further innovate and expand.

“We want to be able to offer other services to our customers. With Zuora, we are confident that we can adapt, adjust, and add new services in the future.” - Peter O’Connell, CEO and Co-Founder of amaysim.
